Civil engineer turned media/entertainment entrepreneur, Fred Chong, founded Prodigee Media in 2005 to focus on the emerging new media industry, including creating a community of online creators such as Karen Kong and Namewee. Today, Prodigee Media produces films and other content alongside online media brand, WebTVAsia, and has offices in Kuala Lumpur (HQ), Bangkok, Beijing, Ho Chi Minh City, Hong Kong, Jakarta, Singapore, Taipei and Tokyo.
WebTVAsia has more than 1,000 channels, including creators such as Bie The Ska, Namewee, Son Tung, and Play three small games, and monthly views of more than 1 billion globally.
Prodigee Media’s debut film, “Nasi Lemak 2.0” directed by Namewee, grossed more than RM7 million in 2011, making it one of the most successful Malaysian feature films in the country.He continued to achieve box office success with ‘Hantu Gangster’ (2012), ‘Kara King’ (2013) and latest film ‘Banglasia’ (2014) and gained international film festival recognition in New York, Osaka, Puchon, Taipei, Asia Pacific (Macau), Beijing and Singapore.
Upcoming film projects include working with Korean director Jo Jin Kyu (“My Wife is Gangster”) for his original work ‘Oppa Kim Sun Nan’ and also producing a remake of Thailand’s box office hit “Teacher’s Diary” for the China market.
Chong’s early ventures in the digital space included mobile ringtone company, Hipmobile, which he sold to Malaysia’s YTL Conglomerate in 2002.
